The wine and Mallorca

The connection between Wine and Mallorca dates from the 7th and 6th century BC.
It was during the time of the Roman occupation that winemaking was first introduced on the island and that it became a common agricultural activity.
This activity survived the Muslim occupation and was revitalized after the conquest by King James I, in 1229.

Between the 14th and the 18th century, the production of Majorcan wine prospered and became one of the main activities of the people on the island.
In 1891, phyloxera appeared on the island, and destroyed most of Mallorca´s vines.
It is not until the last decade of the 20th century that wine production flourished again.
There are now more than 60 wineries on the island, and four Denominations of Origin.
Nowadays, Majorcan wines have a singular character, high quality and a well defined personality, which all contribute to the ever growing international recognition that they receive.
